Brian Silvey

Brian Silvey still gets goosebumps at first light, still ties flies in the shop, and still grins when a big fish turns his line to lead. A legend in Oregon flyfishing and a pioneer of Spey casting in the Pacific Northwest, Brian’s been chasing steelhead and wild trout on Oregon’s iconic rivers for over 40 years. Brian started professionally tying flies as a kid, pulled his first guiding gig as a summer job in 1985, and built his own outfitting business in Maupin, Oregon by ’89. Brian's got a degree in Fisheries Biology and Management to go with those four decades of experience. He knows the rhythms of fish, rivers, and wildlife better than most of us know the ass-grooves of our couches. When he’s not on the water, Brian's shaping rods and lines for Scientific Anglers and R.L. Winston, and inventing staple fly patterns—some of which are probably in your box right now.

Things About Brian

Worst fishing snack: Bananas. They are bad luck in my boat.

Guilty pleasure fly: Egg-sucking leach.

Most overrated fish: I don’t think any fish is overrated.

Most underrated fish: Tailing Carp.

Favorite knot:
Lefty’s Non Slip loop knot.

Waders smell like...Most of the time good, but they do get a little funky about mid-season of guiding.

Person you wish you could fish with: Roderick Haig-Brown.

The best part about fly fishing? Spey casting in a long steelhead run.
