Dawson Schwarz
Dawson Schwarz and his brother Kodi operate Northern BC Outfitters out of Smithers, British Columbia. The steelhead that migrate through the region’s hallowed rivers are Dawson’s first love and primary target when they’re around, but he and his brother also specialize in helping fly anglers experience the vast and diverse fly fishing opportunities the area has to offer. In addition to migratory salmonids they can put you on incredible rainbow, cutthroat, and lake trout fishing most people don’t even know about.
Dawson is the definition of an all-around angler. There’s hardly a fish that swims in North America he hasn’t chased—from alligator gar, bass, and smallmouth buffalo in Texas; to redfish, snakeheads, and sharks in Florida; to pike, walleye, trout, and salmon in Canada—Dawson gets after it. Every season, all year, he’s fishing. While he isn’t a fly purist by any means, Dawson fell in love with fly fishing at 13. If there’s even a chance he can get a fish to chase a fly, that’s what he’s going to do. Dawson loves playing hockey, listening to 80s rock, and any kind of fishing.
Things About Dawson
Worst fishing snack: Chips, not because they are bad, but because my hand will be in the bag the whole time instead of fishing
Guilty pleasure fly: Definitely an egg sucking leech. Almost any species of fish in British Columbia will eat that thing.
Most overrated fish: No such thing.
Most underrated fish: Pike. They don't get much love, but they are sure fun to catch—big and aggressive. What more do you want?
More Things About Dawson
Favorite knot: You really can't go wrong with an improved clinch knot.
Waders smell like...: The outside smells like fresh water coming off a glacier; the inside smells like rotten eggs after a long day.
The best part about fly fishing: I have to say it's the most challenging and rewarding way to catch a fish.
