Jason Renfro
Jason Renfro didn’t start fly fishing until adulthood, when he went looking for a new hobby that kept him out of doors and away from fluorescent lighting. Moderation not being his strength, Jason went all in on fly fishing and continues to do so. One day, Jason wandered into his local fly shop, Fly Fishing Specialties . . . and ended up working there for 15 years. Through years working in the shop and his continued efforts to improve as an angler, Jason discovered a love and aptitude for teaching others about fly fishing and fly casting. Jason now owns and operates Renfro Fly Fishing, a casting and fly fishing school in Northern California, where he also teaches lessons and clinics at premier fly shops. I’m still doing that. Jason firmly believes that no one can ever learn everything there is to know things about fly fishing or casting—the continual pursuit is part of the appeal.

Guilty pleasure fly: Egg-sucking leach.
Worst fishing snack: “I love food. I think the worst fly fishing snack is forgetting to bring one.”
Favorite knot: “Blood knot. I love the elegance and aesthetic of it.”
Waders smell like: “Since I learned to turn them inside out after wear and flip them the next day - they smell just fine.”

Most overrated fish: "Spawning fish. Once I realized what I was doing, it just felt wrong—needed a cold shower and a confessional."
Most underrated fish: Bluegill—they’re beautiful.
Person you wish you could fish with: “Jesus, although he’d cheat.”
Best part of fly fishing: Oof, that’s a tough one—lots of good stuff there. I’d say the people that have become part of my life. I’m forever enriched by the relationships I’ve gained out of this endeavor.
